A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is recommended to men and women who are reasonably healthy and fit, but who have stubborn excess fat, or loose saggy skin concentrated around the stomach.  A tummy tuck will actually tighten and flatten the stomach muscles in addition to removing fat and sagging excess skin.  However, it is very important for women to be sure there is no chance they will get pregnant following this procedure as it can be damaging to both the mother and the child.  There are modified options available for women who plan to continue having children, including a mini tummy tuck, which does not affect the stomach muscles, or some form of liposuction.  The incision for a tummy tuck is made just above the pubic area, and the length of the incision is determined by the amount of skin that needs to be removed; the more skin, the longer the incision.  However, regardless of the scars length, it is made within the bikini area, and should be hidden by most underwear or bathing suits.  In some cases when there is a great deal of loose skin to be dealt with, a second incision may be made around the belly button to facilitate tightening the skin above the naval.  The procedure takes between three and four hours to complete and is an inpatient procedure.  Patients can expect to be absent from work between two and three weeks depending on the physical demands of their job and natural rate of recovery.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

What about old abdominal scars?

In some cases, old scars may limit the results of a tummy tuck.  On the other hand, the incision for a tummy tuck can sometimes be made at the sight of an old scar, particularly the kind left by a Cesarean section.

What happens if I gain or lose weight?

Gaining or losing significant amounts of weight after your surgery can affect your original results.  That’s why it is important to reach your preferred weight before having the procedure.
