Surgery of the Ear

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is usually performed in order to position protruding ears closer to the head.  This procedure can be performed on children after the age of four, when the ear has finished fully developing, and on adults of any age.  The surgery generally takes about two or three hours and is an outpatient procedure.  It may involve a combination of the following: sculpting of the cartilage, removal of some cartilage and permanent stitches to hold the ear in place.  The incision is usually made at the back of the ear and leaves a very small scar that will fade with time.  Directly following the surgery the head will be wrapped in bandages to help maintain the proper position for the ears.  After a few days patients will graduate to a lighter bandage, more like a headband.  Adults can usually return to work within five days, and children to school within seven days.  However, great care should be taken not to bend or pull the ears for about a month following the procedure.
