A breast lift (mastopexy) is recommended for women whose breasts have sagged and stretched over the years, or for younger women to correct inherited abnormalities in one or both breasts.  A good candidate for a breast lift has breasts that are not overly large, but are pendulous rather than round, and the nipples point down.  The procedure focuses on raising the nipple to a more youthful position, while removing excess skin, tightening and shaping the breasts.  Breast lifts can easily be performed in conjunction with an augmentation to restore fullness that may have been lost.  The most common procedure involves three incisions: one made around the areola (the darker pigmented skin surrounding the nipple), one running from the areola down to where the curve of the breast meets the torso, and one following that curve along the base of the breast.  Click here for a diagram of the incision .

However, modifications can be made as to which incisions are made depending on whether the patient is a good candidate for such alterations.  A breast lift takes two to three hours and is an outpatient procedure.  Patients can expect to be out of work for one to two weeks, or more depending on the physical demands of their job and natural speed of recovery.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

What About Breast Feeding?

Patients should still be able to breast feed should they have children following the procedure; the nipple remains attached to the tissue and glands beneath during the surgery.

Will I lose feeling?

There should be no loss of feeling involved because the nipple remains attached to its attendant tissues during the surgery.

Will there be scars?

There will be permanent scars, but they will fade over time.  The scars are in such a location that they are easily concealed by a bra or bathing suit.
