Surgery of the Nose

One of the most well known cosmetic procedures, surgery of the nose, or rhinoplasty, can alter the size or shape of the whole or certain parts of the nose.  A rhinoplasty can also serve to correct birth defects, such as those related to cleft palate, and relieve breathing problems.  The procedure usually takes between one and two hours, and the exact approach to the operation will vary depending on the defect being addressed.  It usually involves detaching the outer skin from the underlying cartilage so that the cartilage can be trimmed or reshaped.  Some additional incisions may be made on the underside of the nose, between the nostrils to reduce nostril size.  Click here to view sketches and step by step descriptions of rhinoplasty provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.  It offers an excellent visual aid for understanding the imperfections that can be addressed by rhinoplasty, and the procedures used to correct them.  After the surgery, patients can expect their nose to be splinted to help it maintain its new shape.  There will be swelling and bruising around the eyes for about two weeks following the surgery.  The swelling may not go down entirely for a few months, but it will be slight and unnoticeable to anyone but the patient and surgeon.  A rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure.  Patients should expect to be absent from work for one to two weeks following the procedure depending on the physical demands of their job.  Patients should avoid any type of strenuous activity for at least a month.
