Scar Revision
Scars continue to mature (fade and soften) for several months after the time of
injury. Conservative treatment, including the application of sun screen, Vitamin
E oils, and Scar Guard©, is recommended and should be maintained for
approximately one year after the injury occurs. These treatments can be supplemented with compression and massage. After one year, the maturation process
plateaus. Consideration is then given to a surgical revision or excision of the old scar material. A scar can not be erased.
Some degree of scarring is going to be permanent no matter what measures are taken. Simply put, surgical revision of a scar is just an
effort to improve the appearance of an unsightly or messy scar. The surgery is generally regarded as cosmetic and is not covered by
insurance plans. The cost of a revision varies with the size of the scar, type of anesthesia, and surgery location.
